Measuring interacting binary mass functions with X-ray fluorescence

چکیده
ABSTRACT The masses of compact objects in X-ray binaries are best constrained through dynamical measurements, relying on radial velocity curves the companion star. In anticipation upcoming high spectral resolution telescopes, we explore their potential to constrain mass function object. Fe K line fluorescence is a common feature spectra luminous binaries, with Doppler-broadened component from inner accretion disc extensively studied. If corresponding narrow irradiated can be isolated, this provides an opportunity further binary system properties. Here, model geometry determine star’s solid angle, and deduce iron line’s equivalent width. We find that for systems ratio q > 0.1, expected K? width 2–40 eV. Simulations using xspec indicate new microcalorimeters will have sufficient able produce emission-line measurements precision 5–40 km s?1, source continuum fluxes exceeding 10?12 erg cm?2 s?1. Several caveats need considered; method dependent successful isolation broad component, observation clear changes independent scatter arising complex wind behaviour. These issues remain proven microcalorimeters, but has parameters where optical not viable.

X-rays from quiescent low-mass X-ray binary transients
I argue that it is very unlikely that X-rays from quiescent black-hole low-mass X-ray binary transients are emitted by coronae of companion stars. I show that in a simple model in which these X-rays are emitted by an ADAF filling the inner part of an unsteady, dwarf-nova type disc, the X-ray luminosity is correlated with the orbital period. I predict what values of X-ray luminosities from black...
متن کاملKinematical Studies of the Low Mass X - Ray Binary
We present simultaneous high-resolution optical spectroscopy and X-ray data of the X-ray binary system GRMus (XB 1254–690), obtained over a full range of orbital phases. The X-ray observations are used to re-establish the orbital ephemeris for this source. The optical data includes the first spectroscopic detection of the donor star in this system, through the use of the Doppler Tomography tech...
متن کاملHigh Mass X-ray Binary Modeling: The Magellanic Cloud Populations
We construct models for the population of high mass X-ray binaries (HMXRBs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). In particular , we investigate the eeect which the lower stellar metallicities of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) has on the evolution and properties of HMXRBs. From the observed properties of the relatively small number of identiied HMXRBs in the MCs, it...
متن کاملBinary Population Synthesis: Low- and Intermediate-mass X-ray Binaries
As has only recently been recognized, X-ray binaries with intermediatemass secondaries are much more important than previously believed. To assess the relative importance of lowand intermediate-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs and IMXBs), we have initiated a systematic study of these systems consisting of two parts: an exploration of the evolution of LMXBs and IMXBs for a wide range of initial masses...
متن کاملA Strong X-ray Burst from the Low-mass X-ray Binary Exo 0748 676
We have observed an unusually strong X-ray burst as a part of our regular eclipse timing observations of the lowmass binary system EXO 0748 676. The burst peak flux was 5:2 ; 10 8 ergs cm s , approximately 5 times the normal peak X-ray burst flux observed from this source by RXTE. Spectral fits to the data strongly suggest that photospheric radius expansion occurred during the burst. In this pa...
